We spent this past weekend celebrating my birthday, and as I've mentioned previously June is my favorite month of the year partly because it's my birth month. What I really love about birthdays, both mine and others, is the excuse to connect. It's reason enough to get friends together, especially those that I don't see all the time, and to catch up with friends and loved ones who are farther away. I spent the morning of my actual birthday on the phone with each of my parents, my sister, and my grandmother. It was wonderful to just spend a few hours talking to them all in turn.
Birthdays are also a fabulous opportunity to eat cake. It's practically a requirement. I love cake, and I'm really all about the icing. While some people find icing to be overly sweet, I like a very high icing-to-cake ratio. I thought that this was a relatively recent phenomenon, but my mother assures me that I've been all about the icing from a very early age!
I love that this time of year the days are long and that fireflies come out on warm summer nights. My childhood birthday memories often involve chasing fireflies and it still gives me a thrill to spot them around NYC. (Madison Square Park at dusk is a good bet.)
