Here's a happy circumstance: June is the best month to buy shoes, specifically designer shoes. June is also my birthday month! Can you guess where this is going? I started a relatively recent tradition of treating myself to a nicer pair of shoes in honor of my birthday. It's only in the last few years that I began splurging on designer heels so it really feels like an indulgent gift to myself. While they're a small part of my wardrobe (and will remain so), statement shoes can really make an outfit.
Remember when I told you that January is the best month to buy boots? It's the same reason to buy shoes in June: sale season. With a bit of dedication, I've found shoes that work both for the current season and for year-round wear. Last year, I even found my wedding shoes during the June sales. I wanted to wear pumps (rather than heeled sandals) for comfort and I wanted a classic, understated look. Embellished bridal shoes didn't feel like me, and I thought that the intricate beadwork on my dress called for simple shoes for balance. I also wanted my wedding shoes to be a pair that I would legitimately be able to wear again, and not just for formal occasions.
As I pulled together my whole wedding look, I settled on pale pink as the perfect color. With such a specific vision, I knew I'd have to put on a hearty search. Nordstrom, Net-a-Porter, Barneys (whose shoe sale is legendary), and Bergdorf Goodman are all places I've had success in the past and I scoured both online (I sent emails to myself full of links to pink shoes) and in store (one of the perks of living in NYC). My best June sale finds have always been in person, and true to form I found my wedding shoes after work one night at Saks. While I had pictured leather and these are suede, my extensive search made me confident that I wouldn't find a more perfect pair.
My approach to the non-wedding-related June shoe sales has been similarly disciplined. I gravitate to classic silhouettes that I know will work with a range of items in my wardrobe. If I'm going big with a shoe purchase, I want to be able to wear it for years to come. That said, the summer shoe sales are a great opportunity to have a little fun too.
Happy shoe hunting!
